Research

Our research focuses on plant systematics, the science whose goal is to discover, describe and classify botanical biodiversity. Systematics provides the basis (classifications) to organize, communicate and generalize research discoveries in other biological disciplines. It also furnishes the tools to identify the basic units of evolution (species and clades) and information on how they are related (phylogenies), which is required in all comparative studies. Systematics also plays an important role in biodiversity conservation, because we need to know where species occur and how to recognize them, in order to protect them.
